Jeremy Porter - Party of One Jeremy Porter
Party of One (MAG041)

(All prices Post-Paid & in Canadian Dollars)

Download Here

Solo debut CD from Detroit's Jeremy Porter (ex-Slugbug & OffRamps). The disc is full of power-pop energy ('Not Like You're Mine', 'Out Inside') and alt-country/Americana yearning ('Last Time I Saw You Happy','Hallmark Holiday'). Perfect for fans of The Replacements, Uncle Tupelo, classic-era Cheap Trick and The Nils!

"Plymouth, MI-based singer/songwriter Jeremy Porter's solo debut is steeped in the kind of loose and earnest slacker Americana that made The Replacements accessible outside of the Twin Cities" All Music Guide

"Jeremy Porter, front man of Detroit's Fidrych and The OffRamps, takes both genres [alt-country with a bar-soaked edge and old-timey power pop infused punk] and effortlessly crafts a seriously enjoyable record with a variety of moods, tempos and lots of clever songwriting." Used Wigs

David Picco - Saturday Night, Sunday Morning David Picco
Saturday Night, Sunday Morning (MAG039)

(All prices Post-Paid & in Canadian Dollars)

Alternative Country/Folk Pop in the vein of classic Wilco/Son Volt. Co-produced, engineered and mixed by Don Kerr, “Saturday Night, Sunday Morning” is made up of 10 original songs. David has been compared to Steve Earle and Bob Dylan, and his sound shows hints of classic Wilco/Son Volt. People inevitably find similarities, but the truth is that David is an individual with an undeniably original voice and unique approach to songwriting.

"Classic Alt-Country & Rock n Roll recommended for fans of Wilco, Son Volt & Uncle Tupelo" Left Hip Magazine

"His way with melody, lyrics, and Saturday Night, Sunday Morning's overall sound, puts him squarely in that place where Uncle Tupelo ended it all: Anodyne" Jeff Weiss Miles of Music

Available on: CD

Fearless Freep - Go Cry Fearless Freep
Go Cry (MAG036)

(All prices Post-Paid & in Canadian Dollars)

'Go Cry' is the 3rd album and it's a catchy, emotional dose of charged, often dark indie rock. Previously known to their fans as masters of sad and slow, this record is a bit of a digression. Although the lyrics still reflect the space between heartbreak and suicide, the music has taken a leap into the pop-rock term. 10 songs in all, and comes wrapped in a beautiful glossy fold out digi-pak.

"The Freep's Singer, Rob Stephens, can make grungy guitar sound just great-think here of Stephen Malkmusm Jay Farrar, even Neil Young." Umbrella Music

"The Freep come with a little more rock than they did on previous albums. They remind me of J. Mascis and The Fog with their jangle pop-rock tunes that are perfect fir a road trip." Impact Press

Available on: CD

Fearless Freep - And The Fall is How You Sleep Fearless Freep
And The Fall is How You Sleep (MAG034)

(All prices Post-Paid & in Canadian Dollars)

2nd full-length record by this Montreal band based around schoolteacher Rob Stephens. Like its predecessor, the record features warm roughshod arrangements full of rough edges and sleepy moods - like a dusty late summer afternoon somewhere out in the backcountry. Sparklehorse and Sebadoh might come to mind, but Stephen's rough drawl and lazy guitar style give his music a quality all of its own. Infections melodies emerge from barren, effortless places. It would be sad if it weren't so comforting. Includes the song 'It's All Good,' which was featured on the debut of Fox's hit show '24' + 9 more.

"Indie rock is an easily tossed around term, but this band revive the heart of the matter. The result: Pretty, gritty, mellow alt-rock, or to quote the bio: 'Sleepy, rockin' pop music.'" T'Cha Dunleavy Montreal Gazette

"The music recalls the mellow side of Sebadoh, and Mascis-in fact it's a lot like old Dinosaur Jr. You'll notice some country stuff and some stuff that also recalls Low's newest effort." Erik Capian IndiePulse.com

Graig Markel - Hard Grammer Graig Markel
Hard Grammer (MAG033)

(All prices Post-Paid & in Canadian Dollars)

'Hard Grammar' is the second full length CD by Seattle based Graig Markel. The album explores the places your mind goes when it's late at night and you've spent too much time alone examining your problems. All of his songs are infused with a touch of soul and a crystalline honesty that leave you warm and a bit unsettled. In all his songs, Markel seems to be yearning for something, balancing bouts of emptiness and anger. Actually, Randy Newmann meets D'Angelo isn't a bad way of thinking about most of Markel's music, which combines the confessional singer-songwriter approach and the slick processed soul tendencies of the `70s. Highlights on this album include 'D'Azz', a sensual slow-burning shoo-be-doo-wop torch song, and 'Live Without It' a rollicking pale-faced R&B number, plus 8 more.

"Hard Grammar is the smoothest, sexiest indie-rock record you're likely to find this year. You can only hope Beck and TLC can hear it pumping through the walls and that they're feeling entirely inadequate." Magnet"

Tagging Satellites - Abstract Confessions Tagging Satellites
Abstract Confessions (MAG032)

(All prices Post-Paid & in Canadian Dollars)

Like that dark-haired poet you had a crush on in high school, there's something mysterious and slightly dangerous about Tagging Satellites. The band's second album, 'Abstract Confessions', is almost a flashback to the moody, art school-influenced underground of pre-breakthrough Jane's Addiction LA - wonderfully detached, on-the-verge-of-a-breakdown female vocals paired with music that finds the middle ground between ethereal and the razor-s edge.

"Zera Marvel has a really good record collection. I can tell you just from the first listen to this CD. She tends to take the best moments from P.J. Harvey's 'Is This Desire', Sonic Youths 'Evol', and Cocteau Twins' '4 Calendar Cafe'" Mike Turner The Bees Knees

Available on: CD

Tricky Woo - Tricky Woo Tricky Woo
Tricky Woo (MAG031)

(All prices Post-Paid & in Canadian Dollars)

Far beyond the valley of the 'Stoner Rock', further than the pools of classic Detroit sounds. This Montreal band serves up 4 great songs on black vinyl that's limited to 770, and wrapped in a gorgeous full-color sleeve with cover painting by Andrew Dixon. Tricky Woo blazed a trail across North America mesmerizing audiences with their high octane rock'n'roll before calling it quits in 2002 and reforming as Soft Canyon. Like the Bible itself, this record belongs in every hotel room!

Available on: Vinyl (10")

Chino - Mala Leche Chino
Mala Leche (MAG029)

(All prices Post-Paid & in Canadian Dollars)

6 killer songs full of ringing melodies and crunching lyrics by ex-Nils singer/guitarist Alex Soria and band. Remember when music used to matter? This will evoke those days, and yeah, it Rocks! On 'Mala Leche' Montreal, Canada's Chino strengthens and refreshes the classic rock formula with the tasteful addition of mandolin and organ - 2 often misused instruments that serve the perfect purpose here: they make the songs sound better. This is music from the AM dial, the songs you hear driving down a country highway at two in the morning after seeing a great show with your best friends. Despite the rock extravagance, there is an undercurrent of sadness beneath the ebullient music. 'Misbehavin' has the insistent beat and sharp hook of a great rock party song, but the lyrics betray a loneliness and disappointment that belle the cheerful music. 'When You're Not Around' is a pogo-inducing anthem, all ripping guitar and harmonious chorus, although you get the impression that the singer might not get the girl after all of his grand professions. Fans of straight-ahead, no-nonsense rock and roll bands like The Replacements, Hüsker Dü and Soul Asylum (back in the day) will love Chino's smart songwriting and rambunctious melodies.

"Like the `Mats, the shy-in-conversation genius Soria straddles all the great rock'n'roll genres, with plenty of punk and post-punk appetite, but also plenty of fiery garage and most of all, Mod stomp.z" Jack Rabid The Big Takeover

"A pretty rockin' CD here from Alex Soria and band. What you get is an EPs worth of well written, melodic rock music in the vein of Hüsker Dü, spiced up with a few keyboards and some mandolin. 'Mala Leche' is a keeper." Suburban Voice

Graig Markel - Verses on Venus Graig Markel
Verses on Venus (MAG028)

(All prices Post-Paid & in Canadian Dollars)

A full-length solo outing from the former lead singer of Seattle's New Sweet Breath. The CD features 10 stripped down ballads and hangover remedies for those quiet moments. Think Geoff Farina/Vermont with a touch of Paul Weller - Lo-Fi Pop Soul. This is Graig's 2nd solo outing, with the 5 song 'Nov/Dec' CDep coming out on Recovery Room Records in `99."

"Markel is a songwriter with a wealth of talent and one gets the impression that hes only just begun to scratch the surface." Stuart Green Exclaim

"Markel has stripped away all of the unnecessary elements in these songs, relying simply on the strength of his voice and his stories." Epitonic

Available on: CD

Von Zippers/Les Secretaires - Split Von Zippers/Les Secretaires
Split (MAG027)

(All prices Post-Paid & in Canadian Dollars)

The unofficial soundtrack to the fictional move 'Dead End Canada'. The single features 4 songs of garage rock from 2 of Canada's great bands: Calgary's legendary Von Zippers (Estrus Records) and Quebec City's LSV(Tir Groupe and members currently serving time in Le Nombre). The country is breaking up and only Rock'n'Roll can save it. It's limited to 660 on 'we surrender' white vinyl with insert.

Available on: Vinyl (7")

Tagging Satellites - Shooting Down the Airwaves Tagging Satellites
Shooting Down the Airwaves (MAG026)

(All prices Post-Paid & in Canadian Dollars)

This 10 song debut record makes you feel all dirty inside and out. Like a slithering snake it thrusts its teeth into your skin. You can feel the venom pour in and seep into every gathering artery. Just when it's about curtains, Tagging Satellites thrust you into a high-speed blender tossing and melting you like an ice cube in Ted Kennedys scotch glass.

"From the digital destruction and sampled voice agitation that starts off the record, one gets the idea that this is a dark affair. A richly organic release with special attention paud to the low end. An amazing record, really. Tagging Satellites operate on the fringe, stumbling in and out of the accessible with speedy elegance." Kelly Bauman Devin in the Woods

"A beautiful use of sounds and vocalist Zera Marvel's edgy vocals. Coming from a punk standpoint this is weird as fuck, which is all the more reason to check it out." Law of Inertia

Available on: CD

Handsome Family/Sackville - Split Handsome Family/Sackville
Split (MAG025)

(All prices Post-Paid & in Canadian Dollars)

2 interpretations of urban country by these critically acclaimed bands. Chicagos Handsome Family take on the 'murder ballad' with 'My Beautiful Bride.' Montreal's Sackville get behind the controls of a runaway train on 'Destroy, Destroy.' Limited to 700 with silver on dark red paper cover and insert.

"Country music has never been about life's happier moments. But few of the genre's artists are as skilled at weaving an endearing melody around the most downtrodden, depressing lyrics as the Handsome Family. Sackville cranks up its lo-fi, back porch country to a more rock-based trudge." Magnet

"Both songs are sweet and touching, even in their anguish." Skyscraper

Available on: Vinyl (7")

Juno - All Your Friends are Comedians b/w The Great Salt Lake Juno
All Your Friends are Comedians b/w The Great Salt Lake (MAG024)

A couple songs from Seattle's finest, who have 2 albums out on Desoto records. The single features a beautiful fill color sleeve and glossy insert. You'll want to pick up an extra just for framing! The 2 songs on this epic single are very different versions of the ones that appeared on the 'This is the Way It Goes' album.

"This band doesn't sound like anything else I've ever heard. They play ambient rock that's emo influenced, and well, out there. Hard hitting and interesting." Miget Breakdancing Digest

"Slint and Chavez ride into a spaghetti western on a tortoise. Not for the attention deficit set." John Cummins Montreal Mirror

Spoon - Anticipation b/w Headz Spoon
Anticipation b/w Headz (MAG023)

(All prices Post-Paid & in Canadian Dollars)

Austin TX bands with records on Merge and Matador loan us a couple of hard pop exclusives. This is what a 45 is all about, 2 nearly perfect songs with energy and hooks to spare. You won't find these 2 songs anywhere else! Cover art by Britt Daniel himself.

"Guitar driven pop that dates back as far as The Who, The Jam and Wire and as recent as The Pixies and Chisel. They are as catchy as hell." Skyscraper

"These songs have an engaging stick-in-the-head quality, especially 'Anticipation'." Suburban Voice

Available on: Vinyl (7")

New Sweet Breath - Acceleration and Distortion New Sweet Breath
Acceleration and Distortion (MAG022)

(All prices Post-Paid & in Canadian Dollars)

The members of Seattle's New Sweet Breath mean what they say and you can tell by the passion in their voice. This high-energy pop is emotional but it isn't all sticky sweet like one comes to expect from recent trends. There is an underlying display of despair on each track. Not just like "Oh I just broke up with my girlfriend and I am really depressed," but like the weight of the world has been on the shoulders of the band members since adolescence. It is grown-up pop that would either heal or push you over the edge if you were desperately depressed. Features 6 songs, including 'Twilight Exit' and 'The Light Is Green'.

"A NSB song sounds like modern-day indie-pop blended with 80s DC hardcore, all set to varying tempos and emotions, going from bombastic to beautiful and back in a matter of seconds." Justin Stranzi Pop Matters

"...as for the kids, I wonder if they've hears the amazing swan song from Seattle's New Sweet Breath 'Acceleration and Distortion.' This falls well outside the scene that's currently ruled by the Promise Ring and their ilk. I'd be willing to bet money that in a blind 'taste test' 7 out of 10 overly-opinionated Get Up Kids fans would love this record." Snackcake

Haywood - Model for a Monument Haywood
Model for a Monument (MAG021)

(All prices Post-Paid & in Canadian Dollars)

12 songs covering the years `92-`96 including unreleased stuff, 7" and compilation tracks. Haywood exercised the principle of control. Control, but not necessarily restraint. Sometimes control can mean restraint, but sometimes it can mean exactly the opposite. Restraint is always holding back, always playing the tip of the iceberg game. But control.now control is something much grander/ Control goes hand in hand with the craft of songwriting, as Haywoods music proves.. Speaking of the craft of songwriting you could try to peg Haywood as an acolyte of Archers of Loaf camp, or the Modest Mouse camp, or even the camps of Pavement, The Replacements, Promise Ring or Rick Springfield - but you'd be wrong every time. They're not from any camp at all, silly. They live in New York City. There's no camp there. What are you talking about? Weird.

"The vocals are lusciously emotional without being overblown, walking in the line between angst and restraint. A fine effort." Stylus

"This band really knows how to put together a pop song. You're guaranteed to get these stuck in your head."

Irving Klaw Trio - Love Equals High Irving Klaw Trio
Love Equals High (MAG020)

(All prices Post-Paid & in Canadian Dollars)

Three song single featuring "More Stuff","DJ Bonzo Meets The Shadow" along with the title track. A mixture of rock, experimental, and dare we say - prog? Portland, OR band that mixes elements of Royal Trux, Can and Albert Ayer. Weird vibes and jazz for our 20th release. They have an album on Road Cone Records.

"IKT's music is filled with strange sounds and off-kilter rhythms that will appeal to Thinking Fellows Union fans" Tad Hendrickson CMJ

"The A-side recalls Pavement's early 'Westing' years, esp. in the vocal deliverym but has instrumentation yards more inventive and bizarre. File under: Pleasantly weird." Montreal Mirror

Available on: Vinyl (7")

Fearless Freep - No Less Sordid Fearless Freep
No Less Sordid (MAG019)

(All prices Post-Paid & in Canadian Dollars)

18 moving and deliberate songs from Montreal's 2 piece band. Fearless Freep release influences from Lou Barlow and other lo-fi creations with pop overtones. Recorded entirely in their own Space City Studios sometime in `96-`97, and just uses drums and guitar. Of course singer/guitarist/studio wiz Rob Stephens threw in some experimental effects and noise so you won't miss a bass player at all. The CD also features a cover of The Nils 'Fountains' which is not on the compilation 'Scratches And Needles' (Also on Mag Wheel Records).

"At times rockin', and at others laid back. In a way they remind me of Built to Spill." Punk Planet

"They showcase a brand of confident, melodic, lo-fi guitar pop. Every song capitalizes on a hooky guitar chord riff, and an impeccable melody line. Singer Rob Stephens is a pop master." Cake

Sackville - These Last Songs Sackville
These Last Songs (MAG018)

(All prices Post-Paid & in Canadian Dollars)

Canada's Sackville burst onto the scene to rave reviews for their 1996 CDEP 'Low Ebb'. This is their 1st full-length and was released in Nov. 1997. The group has the intensity of Slint crossed with the 'slacker country ethic' of Palace. There is also a strong kin to suck moody ramblers as Rex, Red Red Meat and Scud Mountain Boys. On 'these Last Songs,' Sackville maintains the urban country feel but with the addition of a second guitarist they occasionally create a slight math rock feel. Still, the guitar riffs are still submerged in a thick melancholy, which makes Sackville one of Canadas most enjoyable bands. They also have a CDEP out on Montreal's Constellation Records and a split 7" with Chicago's Handsome Family on Mag Wheel Records.

"There is an underlying edginess that leaves you unsettled, waiting for the axe to fall." Stylus

"Graceful and low key North Americana, with that stayed up all night in a bus station all night feel. Features musical saw and violin." scram

Stuntman - The American Fadeout Stuntman
The American Fadeout (MAG017)

(All prices Post-Paid & in Canadian Dollars)

Stuntman rises from the ashes of the Treepeople, a band important in the early `90s American Northwest explosion. That band also spawned Doug Martsch of Built to Spill. This Boise, Idaho quartet has created a powerful record here with a very unique sound. Imagine the pop of Built to Spill meeting the rock of Jesus Lizard; maybe throw in some Knapsack and, oh, who knows. The point is that there is some intricate and huge guirar work, great songwriting and melodies, along with a solid and expressive rhythm section/ This yields their own sound, the Stuntman sound. 'The American Fadeout features 10 songs, including Mostly Always', 'Watch the Skeletons Dance and the 7 minute instrumental 'Esquincles'.

"A raucous example of good old rock'n'roll deconstruction. Shows off the song-as-complex-guitar-solo-ethic. Grab a Pabst and listen to Boise's best mad science in the hammering of 'Mile' or the gnarling 'Watch the Skeletons Dance.'" David Day CMJ

'Stuntman tread familiar ground, following a similar blueprint to that of the Treepeople, they are more mature and they've polished their sound. Stuntman are daring in their pursuit of melodies. Sometimes with subtlety, sometimes not. Sparking Indie Rock" The Rocket

The Nils - Greenfields in Daylight The Nils
Greenfields in Daylight (MAG012)

Once described as having been to 'punk what Big Star are to pop music,' the Canadian group The Nils were one of the most influential, but also most under-rated punk groups of the 1980s. The 29 track 'Greenfields in Daylight ' is the definitive Nils album. Featuring the early compilation tracks from :Primitive Air Raid and BYOs 'Something to Believe In', plus both the 'Sell Out Young' and 'Paisley' eps in their entirety. It also includes-perhaps best of all for collectors-the 5 tracks from the Now demo cassette from 1982. There are also a dozen live songs from a CBC Radio Session, and an excerpt from a 1988 Chicago concert (includes previously unreleased covers of The Who's 'Mary Anne With The Shaky Hands', Tim Hardin's 'Red Balloon' and Men Without Hats 'Pop Goes The World').

"This is an excellent window into a lost fragment of punk history, and a fitting testimony to the Nils Strength and Glory." CMJ

"With better production, more ambition, and more recording sessions, they could have been Canada's Replacements. Buy this CD!" Jack Rabid The Big Takeover

"Another band that continues to rub our faces in their blatant greatness. Short, excitement-filled energetic songs that shoot right through you." Spank

"The band knows how to rock, with the distinction being they know that melodies are as important as riffs. Think early Replacements with some artsy Archers moments." Magnet

Low Ebb (MAG009)

Alternative country in the same vein as Palace, Rex, and Willard Grant Conspiracy. Comes wrapped in a beautiful cardboard digi-pak.

"It is Dirty Three with vocals, or an acoustic Giant Sand? 'Low Ebb' is the subtle. Almost sinister side of psychedellia - a gentile but effective brain scrub that at times can make you doubt your senses" Magnet

"Sackville weave tales that are true and intricate. Low Ebb is long on talent and authenticity. Laurel Bowman
